Wow, what an incredible few days at Intersolar Europe 2025 in Munich! As part of the NextG Power team, I was thrilled to be at the heart of The Smarter E Europe, held from May 7–9 at Messe München. With 1,450 exhibitors and a massive 105,500 square meters of exhibition space, this was the place to be for anyone in solar and energy storage. Here’s my rundown of the event, the buzz around battery energy storage systems (BESS), and the market trends shaping our industry.
The Energy Was Electric
Intersolar Europe, alongside ees Europe, Power2Drive Europe, and EM-Power Europe, turned Munich into a global hub for renewable energy. The ees Europe exhibition, Europe’s biggest for batteries and storage, was a goldmine for us. Our NextG Power site was packed with folks checking out our BESS solutions—think home batteries,C&I batteries,utilities battery systems, EV chargers, and smart new energy solutions, all tied together with our user-friendly app. From the LATAM Business Brunch to the Utility Lounge, I met grid operators, developers, and startups with wild ideas like cow dung anode binders! The Smarter E AWARD ceremony on May 6, honoring top innovations, set the tone for a week of inspiration.
What’s Hot in the BESS Market
The BESS market is booming, and Intersolar 2025 showed why. Europe’s storage capacity hit 61.1 GWh in 2024, and 2025 is set to keep the momentum going. Here are the trends that caught my eye:
Longer Durations Are In
We’ve seen 1–2 hour BESS durations for a while, but now 2–4 horas systems are taking over, with some projects even hitting 4–8 hours. For EV charging stations, a big focus for us, 2–3 hour durations are standard, but solar-integrated setups are pushing for 4 hours to shift energy to evening peaks. BYD’s 932 kWh C&I containers with 4-hour durations were a great example. At NextG Power, we also have longer discharges to support grid services and EV charging.
Solar + EV + Storage = The Future
The integration of solar, BESS, and EV charging was everywhere. Our all-in-one systems, which let users manage solar, storage, and EV charging via our app, were a crowd-pleaser. Hybrid power plants combining solar, wind, and BESS are becoming standard, and inverters are stepping up with grid-forming capabilities. Visitors loved how our app optimizes energy flows in real time—a must for today’s smart energy systems.
Cheaper Batteries, Bigger Systems
Battery costs are dropping fast. This is driving bigger systems, like 5 MWh+ containers and 300 Ah+ cells from CATL and EVE Energy. We’re using these savings to make our BESS more affordable for C&I clients, especially for EV charging. The show also highlighted 500 Ah+ LFP cells, which will hit global markets in 2025, promising even lower costs.
Policy and Grid Needs Fueling Growth
The EU’s Regulation 2024/1747 is clearing hurdles like double taxation, boosting BESS adoption. The UK (25.68 GWh by 2031), Italy (71 GWh by 2030), and Germany are leading the pack. BESS is critical for grid stability, offering inertia and black-start capabilities. Our talks with grid operators at the Utility Lounge showed how NextG Power’s solutions can meet these needs, especially for C&I solar and EV projects.
Chinese Dominance Meets European Push
Chinese players like Trina Storage and Huawei showcased cutting-edge BESS, like the Elementa and Smart String ESS. But Europe’s starting to localize, with companies like some companies building local supply chains, though it’s slow going. We’re exploring partnerships to balance cost and compliance, ensuring our BESS fit EU markets.
Our Experience at NextG Power
Our site was a hotspot, with visitors raving about our scalable BESS and smart app. We learned a ton from competitors, and Hydrostor’s A-CAES, which won a Smarter E Award. The fair showed us BESS is a cornerstone of the energy transition, and we’re all in on longer durations, better integration, and user-friendly tech.
